Yesterday Claude and I made our way back towards Caen, but this time along the coast, to visit our Canadian Beach Juno where our soldiers fought the war. It was cold, dreary, and the seas were crazy with white caps and crashing waves. The weather must be difficult here as most of the flags are torn from their flapping in the wind.
Our next stop included a look at Arromanche, the one area where boats were able to dock and unload cargo, goods, and ammunition. To see large cement blocs lodged in the ocean forever and metal docks turned upside down and rusting along the beachside is quite impressive. Here you have a beach that is beautiful and inviting next to cold and austere looking structures poking out of the sand, so it does feel odd.
In order to preserve a sense of summer, Claude and I made sure to order up two scoops of ice cream and walk around in the intense cold wind. Yes, we certainly did look like crazy tourists, and in the end, the ice cream was awesome and we are glad for our pictures. We don't have enough time to forfit the goodies for 'tomorrow'.
We came home and found the internet so that was our evening in a nutshell.
Here are some pictures...
