Claude and I went to visit the Memorial Museum in Caen yesterday.
We are very near the D-Day beaches and our stop in Caen was to refresh ourselves with the history of this event.
We met an old woman at a bustop (we were off our path and asking for directions) and she shared with us some of her memories.
Lucienne was 11 years old when her father invited a french Canadian soldier in for tea, he had been down by the beach and had called out to the working man with the wheelbarrel. The French Canadian was pleasant and mad at the war. He ripped off his badges and gave them to the little girl listenting with interest to her father's conversation with this stranger. To this day Lucienne has kept the badges and a magazine from 1944. She remembers her father telling her to look out at the sea, he said, remember this my child for you will never see this sight again. Lucienne recalls the sight of the battleships pressed closed to one another and as far as the eye could see overwhelming and magnificient. Caen's people and structures were completely devastated and it took years to bring it back to life.
It is with interest that Claude and I are heading towards Bayeux today.
We are awake and somewhat ready to go.
Our location, nestled in between the many churches, makes it difficult to sleep in. Besides that, we are also conveniently located near a few 'nightlife' establishments and thus we hear the little crowds making their way home at the wee hours of the morning...this has included out loud singing, giggles, and wild outbursts of conversations.
Oh Claude is so good, he's packed his bags and now I'm doddling behind, but the inspiration to write crept up this morning! What can I say.
We do have many things to do today so I must post pictures and get cracking!
Here they are...Dd
